Get smart energy, from Utilita, is an innovative, pre-payment, residential energy supply product aimed at reducing fuel poverty and CO2 emissions. The product uses PRI Liberty keypad metering technology to provide a gas and electricity service with a convenient customer interface.
Smart metering empowers domestic energy customers to gain information on their consumption, to better manage their energy use, to self manage their accounts using a range of convenient payment methods and to pursue a more flexible approach to managing seasonal debt.
Smart meters allow utilities to abandon estimated meter readings, to offer friendlier credit terms and to avoid costly out of hours emergency visits. They also make it easier to design and develop viable tariffs that promote energy efficiency and encourage every customer to curb their energy use.
Utilita (www.utilita.co.uk) is a new energy company working to accelerate the development of a low carbon economy in the UK.
It believes smart metering is:
o Key to promoting the scale of widespread behavioral change required to curb emissions sufficient to help prevent dangerous climate change
o Can be used as a priority to replace antiquated prepayment meters and to support the provision of fair priced energy supply contracts for domestic households living in (or close to) fuel poverty.
PRI Limited is UK market leader in the development, production and supply of smart electronic meters, software and energy monitoring systems. The PRI Liberty keypad meter is already installed in 200,000 households, and offers lower costs to operate "Pay as you Go" services providing the capability to move households away from estimated, inaccurate and error prone utility bills.
Working with PRI, Utilita offers a vertically integrated service team housed under one roof that can design and install smart meters, acquire customers, provide energy efficiency advice and supply dual fuel energy to clustered zones of customers. Utilita is working with several local authorities and housing associations to develop schemes aimed at delivering this technology to pre-payment customers: They have already secured commitment for 10,000 dual fuel customers by April 2008.
Utilita proved its capability to deliver innovative products to the market in 2004-5 when it led a National Energy Action and EU sponsored project to provide energy efficiency advice, energy efficiency measures, and smart metering to 5,000 fuel poor households in Great Britain.
